Welcome to the Project Management Tutorial.  Here we will give you the general overview of project management theory and how it applies to real projects.  We outline the knowledge areas, process groups, and other areas that impact a project manager’s daily life.

When you’re finished with this tutorial you should have a general idea of how professional project management works.

  1. Introduction
    We’ll start right at the beginning with the definition of a project and project management.  The methodology is explained.  The knowledge areas, process groups, and project life cycle are described.  We’ll lay out the organization of a project and typical project roles and responsibilities.
  2. Project Management Plan
    Projects often live or die based on how well they were planned.  The project management plan contains the written intentions of the inner workings of the project, and its importance cannot be understated.  We describe the components of a good project management plan and give advice on each one.
  3. Project Scheduling
    Developing a strong project schedule ensures the expectations of the project are realistic and achievable.  It sets the foundation for a successful project and establishes the baseline to which the project can be measured and controlled.
  4. Project Control
    Once a good realistic schedule and budget are in place, keeping the project within that schedule and budget is one of the big ways to ensure project success.  Keeping projects on schedule is the silver bullet to project success, and there are proven methods to make it happen.  Project control is to the project manager like a hammer is to a carpenter.
